Breakfast – Ideas for a tasty start to the day.

Typical morning at the dachsie household: I’m half awake, the kids are squawking for food, and my spouse is trying to run out the door.  Complicated by the fact that I often end up in a rut of preparing the same foods repeatedly which is met by more squawking from the above mentioned kids or spouse.  So here are some ideas to add variety to your morning.  For many of these items, I have been known to double or triple the recipe and either freeze the rest or serve it again later in the week.  Add some fruit or a glass of milk to most of these and they’re well rounded to happily fill empty little tummies.

  • Grits with butter.
  • Cheese grits.
  • Oatmeal with cream, dried fruits (dates, raisins or cranberries), honey or real maple syrup, spices (cinnamon and nutmeg), or a dot of home canned jam.  Try steel cut oats which have a slightly nutty taste and great texture.
  • Biscuits/toast/banana/English muffin/bagel with a fried egg or a hard boiled egg, and a sometimes a choice of topping (breakfast meat or cheese).
  • Leftovers from another meal, be it lunch or dinner.
  • Graham crackers with peanut butter and banana.  (I am currently testing homemade recipes and will let you know when I get something tastier than the Mi-Del ones).
  • Organic cheese sticks and fruit.
  • A slather of cream cheese, nut butter or homemade jam on quick bread or muffins.
  • French toast made from cinnamon raisin bread.
  • Pancakes with maple syrup, jam or nut/seed butter.
  • Cinnamon rolls.
  • Sausage gravy on grits or some form of bread.
  • Hummus and pita chips.
  • Desperation breakfast: O cereal snack mix (dried fruits, nuts, and o cereal).
  • Yogurt with home canned jam.
  • Smoothie.
  • BLT or grilled cheese sandwiches.
  • Quiche, breakfast strata or other egg based bake.
  • Soup.
  • Omelet, also known as the egg dump skillet,  filled with whatever veggie odds and ends are hanging around.
  • Hash browns made from leftover cooked and chilled white potatoes.
